Simple white cake

For weeks I’ve been practicing icing and baking this cake for a party I hosted this weekend and I’m happy to report it paid off (thank you Kitchenaid mixer!!)!  Whipped up a couple of cake flags while I was at it…super easy with ribbon, washi tape and a couple of bamboo skewers.

Lulu Cake Boutique

I passed by Lulu Cake Boutique the other day while riding in a cab and quickly did a double take from how cute the storefront looked….thankfully, their cakes were as equally as head turning!  I like how they’re modern with a little touch of whimsy.

Coco Cake

modern wedding cakes and cupcakes

I love a good lookin’ cake, especially one that DOESN’T look like a serious wedding cake, and Coco Cake out in Vancouver doesn’t fail to impress!  There’s a bit of whimsy in everything she makes, and I’m especially loving those mustache cupcakes below…be sure to check out her blog for her exceptionally cute kids cakes as well!

Studio tour: One Girl Cookie

Seriously, if you live in Brooklyn and have NOT tasted something at One Girl Cookies, there’s something wrong with you!  Amazing red velvet cake!!
Name: Dawn Casale
Location: 68 Dean St Brooklyn
Company: One Girl Cookies
What do you do? Depends on the day! Usually, I focus on the marketing & image of OGC and keeping it all consistent. Any sort of events, promotions, communications would fall under my jurisdiction. I also work with brides to help create the sweet elements of their special day. Of course, things like HR, bill paying and other “housekeeping” tasks take up some of my time as well.
What is your aesthetic? It sounds so cliche, but modern vintage. I think there is a really fine line between charming and cutesy. I am very careful not to veer too far towards the cute aesthetic.
How does your studio style convey your professional aesthetic? The shop definitely oozes my aesthetic through the window display, serving pieces, design elements, etc… I’m not sure the back of house does as much. I have a business partner (my husband, Dave) and sixteen employees, so my style is somewhat hard to maintain in a busy kitchen. That being said, the kitchen is a really exciting place with lots going on, both production wise and creatively. Plus, it smells pretty darn good.
Favorite part of your studio? My desk is my little oasis where I can maintain control!
Where do you go for inspiration? I actually find the peace of my apartment very inspiring. It’s when my son is napping and I am able to clear my head from the daily clutter that all sorts of creative ideas start gushing in. Of course, blogs, magazines, architecture, art, landscapes, nature, fashion, books….and so on…all play a part in the process.
What tool do you use in your business that you can’t live without? I can’t imagine anyone not saying their computer. Also, now that I am a mom and am at work less, my iPhone keeps me connected. I hate that my first answer to this was technology based, but I suppose it’s the reality of the world we live in. On a non technology related note, my paint swatches/pantone book, vintage cake stands and serving pieces beautiful decorative papers and ribbons. I use those when we are designing a cookie bar, wedding cakes and favor boxes.
Is there anything you’d upgrade to? I would love to overhaul our office, paint the walls a happy color, install a huge wall of inspiration, shelving to display all of the serving pieces I’ve collected and create more organization there. One of these days….
Anything else we should know? I have the best job in the world. When people come into our shop, if they aren’t already happy, there’s a very good chance they will leave happy. What’s better than that?
