From the bride:

We knew that most of our guests would be coming in from out of town, so when we walked into Studio 450, we knew we found our reception space.  With expansive views of NYC, it was the perfect venue to show off the city we call home to our guests, many of whom had never been to NYC before.  We chose all white flowers — giant calla lilies (which have always been my favorite since I was a little girl), orchids and hydrangeas — for a clean, modern look to play off the all white space of Studio 450, but used soft uplighting and tons of candlelight to keep the feel warm and inviting.  We continued the clean, modern look with our invitations, which served as the inspiration for our programs, menu cards, seating board, table cards and other printed materials.

Where possible, our own personalities and preferences drove our decisions.  Our table names were the clubs from Rushmore, one of our favorite movies.  Our menu was full of Asian flavors — both as a nod to my Filipino culture and the fact that we order in Vietnamese and Thai once a week!  My mom even made her homemade empanadas as a late night snack.  Our wedding cake was from our favorite bakery, Lady M.  Some friends drove in beer from Bell’s Brewery, a brewery from Jeff’s college town.  And if you know my personality, the card monster makes perfect sense!

But our overarching goal was to throw an amazing party for our guests that we would remember for the rest of our lives.  We focused on great music, food and cocktails, but with friends and family as wonderful as ours (who all love a good dance party), it wasn’t hard to create a memorable night!

From the couple!

All in all, we wanted a simple, relaxed wedding – outdoors, minimalistic, modern but warm and laid-back. We really wanted to focus on having fun and enjoying our close friends and family, most of whom came in from out of town (South Africa, Netherlands, Germany, CA, lots from NY, & Mississippi). We picked the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center for its open and post-industrial-esque space outside, with our fingers crossed for good weather and no trains (success on the weather!). Alice Reynolds helped us with the succulent-inspired arrangements and lots of the design details – including impromptu chalk drawings on the walkway that were a big hit with the guests.

We wrote our vows together with the help of our friend and officiant Jessica Chilton using crayons, construction paper and a toy-covered sand box (her day job is a creative arts therapist). Some of the highlights were the unexpected toasts, seeing props from the photo booth make their way to the dance floor and lavender smores (from our creative caterer SIMB) cooked over a flaming fire-pit. For the end of the night we had big plans for everyone to let off paper sky laterns, inspired by a trip to Thailand earlier in the year. Some alarmed guests, a few singed hairs, and a flaming tree later, we realized sky lanterns are a lot more graceful on the beach. Good thing the Georgia Brown Ale was flowing to calm the nerves!

From the photographer:

On a late summer day in Brooklyn, two people made a pact to love and respect one another for the rest of their lives. On September 1st, Shani & Lauren were legally joined in matrimony overlooking the Audubon center in Prospect Park, after having eloped in Paris earlier in the summer. After the ceremony, the pair perused the Brooklyn flea on the their way to 606 R&D to cool off with summertime spritzers. The newlyweds were received by an intimate reception where spontaneity ruled and the atmosphere was connected. Chatter and laughter could be heard as guests dined on delicious local, organic, gluten-free foods.  They were serenaded by one of their close friends, who sang a euphoric acappella rendition of A Thousand Years. As the sun set, the day was capped off with a stroll home through the streets of Brooklyn.
